Dr. Mariia Levchenko is the Program Director and Founder of the NGO “Youth for Global Progress”. Within the NGO, she is responsible for implementing, monitoring and assessing strategic development, and assisting with advocacy meetings with local authorities. She is an Associate Professor at the Khmelnytskyi national university, where she has obtained her Ph.D. in Economics, and MBA in International Relations. She is a graduate of “Community Leadership Institute” an Executive and Professional Education Program at George Mason University, having completed Fellowship at River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, supported by IREX. She has studied at Warsaw Euro-Atlantic Summer Academy (WEASA) at the College of Europe. Mariia works under the theme «Tolerance and Conflict Resolution» with refugees and internally displaced persons, and under the British Council program “Active Citizens” on the projects aimed to increase youth opportunities for employment.




Workshop Purpose: The aim of this workshop is to illustrate the Communication and Self-Esteem Program as a vital component of youth empowerment, to understand the rationale and implications of practicing emotional intelligence, and to raise the awareness of the importance of using such component in youth work.

Workshop Description: Oftentimes youth will identify their readiness for college/career when they have an appropriate mix of academic knowledge, technical experience, and employability skills. The recent findings prove that in the modern and changing world, such skills as a positive self-concept, communication and listening skills, teamwork and initiative, self-management and conflict resolution are valued more by the employers than experience or knowledge of the field.

By giving youth an opportunity to develop these skills in a safe and controlled environment while providing a community service credit incentive, we empower and see new attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors.

C&SE Workshop begins with naming, identifying and recognizing the causes of our actions and introducing such concepts as Iceberg Model, Emotional Intelligence, and Resilience. Facilitation of these skills and asking the youth to work them out can remind them of their goals and dreams and enhance the relevance of the material.

Workshop Curriculum:

  1. Exploring human complexity using the iceberg model, exploring feelings, universal human needs and how needs drive behavior (45 minutes).

Doing the pre-assessment before the training. Exploring behaviors that youth might address through this element. Analyzing keys to success.

Doing the ice-breaker “The wind blows”.

Introducing iceberg model as a metaphor for the complexity of individuals.

  1. Identifying effective and ineffective communication (45 minutes)

Raising awareness of the difference between effective and ineffective communication. Learning a tool to explore our choices and summarizing up the workshop. Providing participants with a model to help youth to consider their choice options and impact of each option.

In this workshop, some experiences of the use of this technique will be presented and its strengths and limits will be discussed. Participants will be asked to complete and comment on Iceberg Model of Human Complexity, Choice Point Model, Self and Conflict Management. The key point for the discussion will be the importance of building up Resilience both by trainers/youth workers and young people in the process of their mutual work and cooperation.
